Artist Statement

My approach to creating is a freeing, hedonistic and spontaneous experience. As a multidisciplinary artist I love to work with many mediums, primarily focusing on painting and ceramics, and they often reflect within each other. I love combining the two mediums together and incorporating many different out-of-the-ordinary materials.

My paintings are sublime chromatic ecstasies that splash over the viewer. Invoking the pleasure of colour, the composition reveals itself through impulsive gestures and movements. Left to chance, colours are applied by the act of spilling, pouring and dripping. Lush, impasto marks contrast thin washes of colour. Vivid colours bleed into one another, as the natural tendency of the medium flows across the surface, creating layers inspired by cosmic imagery such as nebulas, ariel views and microscopic imagery such as cancer cells, mold, or rust.

My ceramic work blurs the boundaries between craft and fine art. With white stoneware, I create a combination of abstract sculptural work and functional ware and I enjoy when they integrate into each other. I often refer to my sculptural wall pieces as 3D paintings, as they are primarily made through the same process as my paintings. The process of allowing the shape to reveal itself through play and layers. With a profound love of texture, all my work is reminiscent of biological imagery found in micro and macro universes, anatomical and plant ecosystems, coral reefs and mycology. My work, including my barnacle and vulva mugs, not only celebrates the human body, nature, colour and abstract form, but the connection between them all and the freedom and therapeutic potential of the medium itself.

Using a combination of throwing, hand-building, slip casting and press moulds, I create textures, patterns and shapes from found objects in nature and repurposes them into new objects. The surface treatment is often a balance between control and spontaneity. I love to experiment with different combinations and layers of glazes, bubble glazing, melted glass, underglazes, stains and oxides.

My work reflects the process and pleasure of the act of making. It is a meditative, freeing occurrence that has healing qualities and reminds us of the healing qualities found within us and in nature. I am inspired by abstract expressionists, art therapy, and biodiversity. I enjoy the play of dualities such as; grotesque/beauty, fear/deep appreciation, death/life and decay/rebirth. The artwork comes alive and respected as independent entities, encouraging free association. They invite the viewer to travel inside and to move about the work, communicating with it. I treat each piece as a living being going through a birth process and life of its own, continuously changing and arriving at a final product that tells their story.
